What happens to unused funds in your NDIS plan

What happens to unused funds in your NDIS plan

It's common for some of your allocated funds to go unused by the end of the plan year. Understanding what happens to these unspent funds can help you plan better and make the most of your NDIS support.

Unspent funds in your plan

If you don't spend all the money in your plan, it usually remains in your plan account. These funds can be carried over to your next plan period, depending on your plan type and circumstances. This means you might have more flexibility to access support when you need it, without losing any money.

When funds don't carry over

In some cases, particularly with certain types of plans or specific funding categories, unspent funds might not automatically roll over. For example, some support categories or funding pools are intended for immediate use within the plan year and may reset if unused. Your plan manager or support coordinator can help clarify whether your unused funds will carry over or need to be spent within the current year.

Planning to use your funds

To make the most of your support, it's helpful to plan your services and purchases throughout the year. Regularly reviewing your plan and communicating with your support team can ensure you use your funds effectively and avoid any unnecessary rollover restrictions.

If you find yourself with unspent funds at the end of your plan, consider discussing with your support coordinator or plan manager about how to best utilise these funds before your next review. This way, you can continue to access the support you need without losing any allocated funds.
